2022 project guides

Before applying for a postgraduate research degree, you must select a project from the guides listed below.

Find a HDR Project

Your research proposal

Your research proposal should address relevant issues such as:

  • What is the general area of research you are proposing to pursue?
  • In more specific terms, what research questions does this involve investigating?
  • What literature are you aware of which has already investigated this research area?
  • Does this literature provide you with a theoretical framework, or illustrate gaps that require research?
  • What research methods, and what specific research tasks, do you envisage your research will require?

Upgrade from a Masters to a PhD

It is generally only possible to enter directly into the PhD if you have a relevant Masters degree, or an undergraduate degree with first-class or upper second-class Honours.

After one year of full-time study (or part-time equivalent), Masters students are eligible to apply for transfer to a PhD. The decision on an “upgrade” to a PhD is based on progress made in the Masters research.

Enrolment

Once an offer of enrolment has been made, you should complete the enrolment process as instructed in the offer letter.

Once enrolled, in collaboration with the proposed supervisors, you then submit an 'Application for Higher Degree by Research Candidature' to the relevant head of school who will arrange for the application to be considered by the appropriate RMIT boards and/or committees.
