In mid 2014 NICTA (National ICT Australia) and RMIT University agreed to jointly establish a Data Analytics Lab to harness the wealth of research opportunities arising from developments in machine learning, data analytics and big data. More than 200 academics and students, as well as government and industry representatives, attended the lab’s launch on 20 November 2014 at RMIT’s Swanston Academic Building (SAB) in Melbourne.
The RMIT Data Analytics Lab supports data analytics research that helps Australian and Victorian businesses compete on a global scale. With practical applications ranging from retail services to health, infrastructure to environment, the impact of data analytics across Australian industry sectors is expected to be worth many hundreds of billions of dollars.

A key aim of the Lab is to leverage university, government and industry expertise to achieve significant and tangible research impacts, solving challenging industry research and development problems. The Lab specialises in applying text, user and data analytics research to industry-driven projects and providing efficiencies in areas such as, health, logistics, smart cities (urban development and transport), environment and security.
The Lab comes under the aegis of RMIT’s School of Science, whose computer science and IT researchers are widely recognised as leaders in data analytics and information retrieval, as well as other fields including intelligent systems, distributed systems, cloud and service computing.
Professor Mark Sanderson leads the Lab, which is based at RMIT’s city campus on Swanston Street in the heart of Melbourne. The Lab builds on RMIT's existing track record of successful collaboration with partners including Seek, Google, Westfield, VicRoads, Public Transport Victoria and ANZ.
