Overview

Dr. Bishwajit Chowdhury has been with RMIT University since 2014. He completed his PhD in Geotechnical Engineering from Monash University, Australia in 2013. Dr. Chowdhury also completed his Master of Engineering (by research) degree from National University of Singapore, Singapore, and his Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree with Honours marks from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Bangladesh. Dr. Chowdhury has published his research works in top international journals in the area of Geotechnical Engineering.

Dr. Chowdhury also has more than seven years of industry experience. Before starting his PhD at Monash University in 2009, he was working as a Superintendent Engineering with Gramenphone Ltd, the largest telecom company in Bangladesh. At Grameenphone, he was responsible for overall management of the structural and geotechnical analyses and design works for various infrastructure required for establishing telecom networks.

In his current role as a Program Coordinator, Dr. Chowdhury is responsible for providing current and future students with advice regarding their study in the Associate Degree in Engineering Technology program.

Dr. Chowdhury also teaches and coordinates multiple courses in the Associate Degree in Engineering Technology program. Dr. Chowdhury’s current teaching commitments include MIET2138 – Engineering Management, OENG1068 - Engineering Project (Civil), EASC1081 - Soil Mechanics, and CIVE1206 - Roads and Transport.

Industry experience

Dr. Bishwajit Chowdhury has more than seven years of industry experience. Before starting his PhD, Dr. Chowdhury was working as a Superintendent Engineer with Grameenphone Ltd. the largest telecom company in Bangladesh.

Over the five years of employment with Grameenphone, Dr. Chowdhury successfully managed the geotechnical and structural design works for establishing telecom networks for the company.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Overall management of the geotechnical and structural design team
  • Planning and managing the sub-soil investigation works, and analyses and interpretation of the geotechnical investigation data for various transmission tower establishment projects and multi-storied building projects
  • Geotechnical and structural analyses and design of shallow and pile foundations for self-supported heavy-duty telecommunication towers
  • Geotechnical and structural design of shallow and pile foundations for multi-storied buildings
  • Analyses and design of different types of earth retaining structures
  • Analysis of slope stability problems
  • Liaising with various other groups of the company, contractors and external consultants
