Getting serious about workplace gender equality

The promise of the new Victorian Gender Equality Act is for transformative change within organisations and for greater gender equality in the wider community. The Gender Equality Act 2020 is designed to improve workplace gender equality in the Victorian public sector, universities and local councils. So, what makes the Gender Equality Act different from existing gender equality regulation? Why does it hold out greater promise for change? How can this new legislation address some of the most intractable problems of gender inequality in the workplace and beyond?

Dr Niki Vincent, Victoria’s first Public Sector Gender Equality Commissioner will consider these issues, joined by a panel of workplace gender equality experts from the three sectors covered by the new Victorian Gender Equality Act – the public, university and local government sectors – who will provide their perspectives on the opportunities and challenges for positive change in their organisations and sectors. This includes Brett Curran, Assistant Commissioner, Gender Equality & Inclusion Command, Victoria Police; Lisa Darmanin, Victoria / Tasmania Branch Secretary, Australian Services Union; and Professor Kay Latham, Dean, STEMM Diversity & Inclusion, RMIT University.

Professor Martie-Louise Verreynne, Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research & Innovation College of Business and Law, will open the seminar. Distinguished Professor Sara Charlesworth, Director, CPOW will facilitate the discussion and Professor Johanna MacNeil, Dean, School of Management will offer closing remarks.
