2022 Higinbotham Lecture: Professor Megan Davis

Uluru Statement from the Heart and the referendum on a Voice to Parliament.

Australians could soon be asked to vote in a referendum on whether Australia should amend its Constitution to create an Indigenous Voice to Parliament in answer to the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

The Statement, made in May 2017 by over 250 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Delegates, was a call addressed to the Australian people, inviting them to create a better future for the nation’s First Peoples through key constitutional reforms.

Join us to hear from one of the key figures behind this history-making Statement, Professor Megan Davis, Pro Vice-Chancellor Society (PVCS) and Balnaves Chair in Constitutional Law at UNSW Sydney. We are delighted to host Professor Davis, a Cobble Cobble woman of the Barunggam Nation and a renowned constitutional lawyer and public law expert.

This lecture will discuss the journey to constitutional recognition in Australia. It will explain the history of recognition, the Uluru Statement from the Heart and set the scene for the impending referendum on a Voice, the first referendum to be held in more than two decades.
