When a Capstone Project and passion startups collide.

Capstone Projects are often the pinnacle of an Undergraduate Degree, where students work on an industry project in teams. This is commonly the case in computer science where students have an opportunity to apply their learning over 12 weeks with an assigned industry client.

But what if the industry partner was unknown or yet to be validated, and the project team was already in place as a passionate pair hard at work on a project with a startup company of their own?

This was the case of final year computer science students Kurt Invernon and James Cockshott, who were participating in Activator’s flagship pre-accelerator program LaunchHUB, and were keen to pursue an alternate pathway for their Capstone.

Given the hours they were putting into their startup project, and the learning outcomes or milestones which teams work towards with the guidance of a startup coach within the program, the viability of this opportunity to apply their startup project as a Computer Science capstone was proposed.

In consultation with their program supervisor and with a highly positive nod from the schools Associate Dean, the proposal was deemed a good fit with learning outcomes and given the go ahead.

Quietbyte is a solution which utilizes small IoT devices, to provide incredibly accurate analytics. Through the use of machine learning algorithms this supports decision makers to optimise property usage which eliminate wasting space. With a SaaS interface this intuitive product enables users to understand their data in a meaningful way, generate reports, and access customize search functions.

Their smart solution was presented to RMIT Property Services at the break of COVID-19 pandemic and has been used to support the university’s space related challenges. RMIT in this case, became that first customer and capstone industry partner all in one.

The case of Quietbyte has pioneered the opportunity for many more students to connect their studies to passion projects which Activator supports by building the capabilities, connections, and resources to go to market.

Where passion, opportunity and skills collide there is bound to be success, and this was evidenced when James and Kurts capstone project was awarded a higher distinction. “Being able to do what we wanted at the end of the day made everything a lot more enjoyable, and we were able to get high marks because we cared a lot more about what we were doing as well” said James. 

As final year students, facing future career prospect they are huge champions for students building entrepreneurial capabilities and building their own futures at Activator “I think if students are wanting to do something that they are passionate about, they should join activator. As Kurt say’s from his remote office “Anyone who is looking to start a business or has a business idea, no matter what stage you're at, join Activator. It's been incredible, and I can't wait to get back”.
