Our national transport safety investigator, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) investigate aviation, marine and rail transport incidents. The ATSB is now working with RMIT to deliver nationally accredited safety investigation training and facilitate transport safety research.
Announced at the 2019 Australian International Airshow, the agreement sees RMIT become the ATSB education partner, offering Transport Safety Investigator qualifications. The first course on offer is a Graduate Certificate in Transport Safety Investigation, teaching how to manage and lead accident investigations of air, rail and marine vehicles.
In the long term, this qualification will create a pathway to further higher education programs and eventually a Graduate Diploma and Masters-level qualifications, providing Australia and the Asia-Pacific region with access to high quality training in transport accident investigation. A framework will also be developed to facilitate important transport safety-related research through a credible university-based methodology
“Together we will work to improve transport safety throughout the Asia Pacific region, across aviation, maritime, and rail industries. To achieve this, we will co-create and deliver tertiary level transport accident investigation qualifications to both the ATSB staff and the broader transport safety sector. The relationship will also involve a range of collaborative research projects which will bring together RMIT’s deep expertise in delivering world-leading research with the ATSB’s considerable industry knowledge, intelligence and data access. Through this relationship we hope to facilitate an industry-wide capability improvement program throughout the Asia Pacific region,” said RMIT Vice Chancellor and President, Martin Bean CBE.
Prior to the partnership, the ATSB conducted its own nationally accredited Diploma of Transport Safety Investigation, training safety investigators in-house at their Canberra offices.
This limited the scope of course delivery and access to training for individuals. Through the partnership, the ATSB can drive greater improvement in transport safety through enhanced education and cutting-edge research.
The inaugural Graduate Certificate in Transport Safety Investigation course will give students the education they need to plan, manage and conduct transport accident investigations.
Students will gain extensive skills, from technological systems design to analysing complex technical and managerial aspects of an accident via theory-based engineering. Alumni will graduate work-ready and set for a successful career with this ATSB co-endorsed accreditation.
