Deferral and leave of absence

If you wish to defer or take a leave of absence, we can help.

If you would like to delay your study, you can defer or take a leave of absence. Depending on your current status, you can find the right process for you here. We recommend waiting until closer to census date before changing your enrolment status. Go to Enrolment Online to check the census date for your individual program.

Defer your place before you start

If you are a commencing student who has accepted an offer but not yet enrolled, you can defer your offer.

Domestic students

If you are a domestic student, please follow the steps to Defer your place before you start uni.

Please note RMIT considers you to be a domestic student if you are a citizen or permanent resident of Australia, a New Zealand citizen or a Temporary Protection visa (TPV) holder.

International students

To follow the steps for deferral or to contact RMIT International Admissions, please visit Defer your Offer for International Students.

Take a leave of absence

If you are a current student who has already enrolled, you can take a leave of absence.

All students

If you are a domestic or international student please follow the leave of absence process to apply. This way you are covered academically and financially, and we can advise on how to return from Leave of Absence when you’re ready to resume your studies.

You must apply for a leave of absence before your census date to avoid paying fees.
