RMIT ranked #2 globally for blockchain

RMIT has been announced as the second highest ranked university globally for blockchain.

The CoinDesk ranking, conducted in conjunction with Stanford University, surveyed 230 institutions that provided higher education courses and offerings and where academic research has impacted the development of blockchain technology.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Business and Law) and Vice-President Professor Julie Cogin said it was a fantastic recognition for the University.

"We're thrilled to be ranked number two globally in blockchain, recognising the outstanding achievements of our Blockchain Innovation Hub, Centre for Cyber Security Research and Innovation, and researchers across the College of Business and Law,” she said.

"Blockchain, digital finance and the digital economy are flagship areas of expertise for RMIT through our recently launched Victorian Government funded Digital CBD project, and as a lead institution in the $181 million Digital Finance Cooperative Research Centre (CRC).

"As a growing area of student demand, we've also empowered our students to choose from a range of study options in Blockchain, including our new industry-integrated Bachelor of Business and post graduate programs.”

The top five ranked universities from the Coindesk study were:

1.       National University of Singapore (100 pts)

2.       RMIT (97.65 pts)

3.       University of California Berkeley (93.26 pts)

4.       University of Zurich (91.66 pts)

5.       Massachusetts Institute of Technology (91.57 pts)

Blockchain Innovation Hub Director Professor Jason Potts said the accolade was well deserved by all involved in RMIT’s Blockchain Innovation Hub, which has been in operation for the last four years.  

“There is strong competition in the blockchain technology space in higher education. Our second placed ranking solidifies RMIT’s position as not only a world leading research centre but also as the top choice for students to come and study," he said.

The RMIT Blockchain Innovation Hub is the world’s first research centre on the social science of blockchain. Bringing together economics, sociology, public policy and political economy, the RMIT Blockchain Innovation Hub provides a new way to understand the global blockchain evolution.
