Voop.Global

Founded by People and Culture expert Kristin O’Brien, Voop.Global uses machine learning and big data to assess company culture, highlighting when it’s at risk and sharing suggestions to drive cultural change.

From student to staff member

When Kristin offered Master of Data Science student Rohan Shetea Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placement with Voop.Global, she didn’t know what an integral member of the team he would become.

Under the guidance of Chief Data Scientist Suresh Sood, Rohan helped build the first version of Voop.Global’s product and successfully develop a baseline of what healthy and toxic corporate cultures are. In a matter of months, the RMIT student became a key member of the team and earned a full-time contractor role.

“It was a no brainer. Rohan got us to a certain point where we couldn’t stop working together. What Rohan worked on when he first started was very different to where he ended up. That can be attributed to his courage and absolute fearlessness to try new things and push boundaries.”

Drawing insights from big data

Determined to find a better way of evaluating company culture, Kristin aimed to break new ground with machine learning and big data.

“I had a big vision of how I wanted it to be, but hadn’t yet cracked how to get there,” said Kristin.

Rohan’s WIL placement began as Kristin was building the data science component of her tool and his contribution helped turn her vision into a reality.

“The way that People and Culture is approached remains very last century. Voop.Global is doing a great job in finding a better way to do things. I totally believe in their vision, which is why I can give my 100 per cent,” said Rohan.

Activating workplace culture

Joining RMIT Activator’s LaunchHUB program in early 2019, Kristin has received the support needed to explore and test her ideas, embarking on the journey from early-stage product to market launch.

“The stand-up meetings made us accountable and the coaching kept us on track. It was essential because that was arduous work. If I didn’t have LaunchHUB supporting me, I wouldn’t have got it done as quick as I did,” said Kristin.

RMIT Activator also helped Kristin source high-level student support in Rohan, who helped translate the idea for Voop.Global into a cutting-edge product.

Voop.Global uses sentiment scanning and natural language processing to read and summarise large volumes of an organisation’s written communication data.Through assessing this communication data, an aggregated view of a company’s culture is created. The technology then mines this data, searching for trends and patterns indicating what an organisation should do or stop doing to move closer to its desired culture.

“The problem we want to solve is a poor company culture that can reduce productivity by 40 per cent. We want to help organisations build a better environment that optimises work performance and increases employee happiness,” said Kristin.
