In 2020, RMIT University’s CAMS (A Central Asset Management System with a Data-Driven Flare), became a partner in a multi-million dollar European project on rail cybersecurity research known as Data-based analysis for SAFETY and security protection FOR detection, prevention, mitigation and response in trans-modal metro and RAILway networkS (SAFETY4RAILS).

Earlier activity with this project led to funding awarded by the Information in Society Enabling Impact Platform.
RMIT’s CAMs, developed by Professors Sujeeva Setunge and Ron Wakefield, is developing a comprehensive asset management system for railway operators and used at project demonstration sites in Spain, Italy and Turkey. Starting with a review of rail incidents around the world, CAM is now analysing the cyber-physical resilience of metro and railway systems and being investigated to further develop its modules for rail stations, rail tracks, rail electronic and cyber infrastructure.
Professor Setunge said the system is linking asset management and disaster resilience to provide the capability to optimise the budget for a given level of resilience planning. “The model is used for policy planning and investment measures of prevention-detection-response activities. The system will then be integrated with other systems developed for event tracking and dynamic monitoring to identify the impact of events on physical infrastructure and the associated costs and impacts on operation.”
