International students can gain industry experience through over 1,000 virtual micro-internship placements with real industry clients.
The RMIT Industry Experiences Program is a co-curricular professional skills development program offering over 1,000 industry experiences for international students. This program is available for students who commenced their studies in 2024 intakes at RMIT University.
The program is a 2-3 week virtual work experience where teams of students work collaboratively to solve a real industry client challenge. Students will receive a project brief from their client and are required to present their research and insights at the end of the program. As part of the program students receive feedback from the industry partner and mentor.
The RMIT Industry Experiences Program is available across a broad range of study areas and year levels.
In the RMIT Industry Experiences Program, you will be placed in a team of up to six students from a variety of disciplines. By working alongside other students in the program, you’ll build valuable skills in communication, strategic thinking and collaboration that will help you stand out to employers in any industry.
The RMIT Industry Experiences Program gives you the opportunity to solve problems for real industry clients. Through your virtual internship, you’ll learn what it's like to set objectives, research solutions and present information to stakeholders of your project. Gaining these foundational skills will put you one step ahead of the experience needed in your future workplace – particularly as the world moves towards hybrid and remote work arrangements. Upon completion of the program, you’ll also receive a digital certificate that you can include in your future job applications.

To be eligible for the RMIT Industry Experiences Program you must be a full-fee paying international student and meet the following criteria:

Once you are a confirmed participant, we will invite you to the program's information and preparation sessions. We want to ensure that you are settled in and can make the most of the opportunity.
The RMIT Industry Experiences Program will require you to commit to 25-40 hours of learning and project work over two to three weeks depending on the program you choose. Your role will be to deliver a quality project outcome for your industry client.
Any work experience or work placement that is not a mandatory course requirement, such as the RMIT Industry Experiences Program, or that is in excess of the period required in the course registration will be included in your work restriction of 40 hours per fortnight.
The program is designed to help you gain experience that is transferable across industries and build a diverse skill set, no matter what area or level of study you’re interested in. However, we will do our best to organise projects that are directly related to your course or area of study.
You will receive a range of support along the way from RMIT. This will include a range of preparation activities, information and orientation sessions that you will be expected to attend. All activities will be online.
Closer to the start date, you will participate in a client meeting and access project learning instructions with content and collaboration functionality through the RMIT supported platform.
You will work autonomously but can reach out to RMIT staff to help resolve any issues. You will be guaranteed feedback on your deliverables and will receive a digital certificate upon completion to showcase your achievements.
