Moving to Australia from Pakistan to study a postgraduate degree was a big leap of faith for Darooj Karmani – one that paid off and opened a world of opportunity.

After completing his undergraduate degree in computer engineering, Darooj started looking for the best locations and universities to study a Master of Business Information Technology.

“I searched for almost six months to decide which university I wanted to pursue for my masters and in which country,” he said.

“RMIT University in Melbourne ticked all boxes that I was looking for, such as teaching staff, courses, and study environment.

“I like maths and logic designing. That motivated me to choose a Master of Business Information Technology degree. In my field, I always wanted to help the customer and solve their problem in a digital way, because we are in a world where everything is connected to digital devices.

“And every business is connected somehow to the internet or a digital device for instance – from a coffee shop to the Apple organisation.”

Darooj said one of the highlights of his studies at RMIT was the ‘Hacker Exchange’, a global innovation program.

“I travelled to San Francisco via the Hacker Exchange program which was one of the highlights during my studies,” he said.

“It was two week program where I learned about entrepreneurship and pitched my idea to different investors. In just two weeks, I met so many people which is so important for networking across different organisations and observing their culture and their journey.”

Darooj said RMIT gave him the confidence to step forward and follow his passions.

“I built confidence in myself and learned a great number of soft skills which has helped me so far, and will help in the future,” he said

“I participated in a lot of volunteering and collected many volunteer certificates which were very important to me. You meet lots of people from different countries and I visited many different places.

"My advice is to look for those subjects which you like and are passionate about. It doesn’t matter whether it’s networking, hardware or programming. If you’re passionate about programming and like to code at any time or day, then go for it.

“Always research before making any decisions and try to connect with teaching staff or a program coordinator because they will give you more details and clarification which you are looking for."

Darooj said clubs and societies were a fantastic part of university life.

“Apart from studies or assignments, there are plenty of things that you can do during your degree such as volunteer works, sports activities or join social clubs which will increase your networking and soft skills,” he said.

“I am happy where I am today, but always looking for next the step which is to get my dream job as a business analyst and serve my duties back to communities.”
