Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Required Prior Study

While there is no required prior study it is recommended that you satisfactorily completed ARCH 1023 - Architecture History 1 AND arch1026 ARCH History 20TH Century before you commence this course.

Under special circumstances you may be able to undertake this course prior to completing ARCH 1024 – please contact to the program manager.

Alternatively, you may be able to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge before you start this course.

Contact your course coordinator if you think you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning.

Course Description

This course introduces you to a selected range of issues central to the development of architecture in Australia, with a focus on architecture situated on the unceded lands within Melbourne and Victoria.  It examines the influence on Australian architects, the developments of movements within this country and develops a basic knowledge of Australian architectural history. The contents of the course are organised chronologically as a broad survey.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  •  Critically analyse, evaluate and make informed judgement on a wide range of architectural problems and situations.
  • Comprehend key architectural works, cultural movements and ideas, their theoretical and cultural context and relevance to design.
  • Communicate complex design ideas through verbal, visual and written media.

Learning is an interactive, participatory process involving both teachers and students and the success of the class depends on the levels of input from all the participants.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of a selected range of social, cultural and political factors which have shaped Australian architecture.
  2. Demonstrate critical analysis and the ability to examine an issue in its context, reflect on it, intelligently assess accepted interpretation of the material and form a coherent personal opinion as a result of this.
  3. Creatively analyse architecture from a number of perspectives and arrive at original positions.
  4. Communicate effectively through a range of different modes including verbal, written, graphic and spatial modes.

Overview of Learning Activities

You are strongly encouraged to attend all lectures and tutorials and complete all assessment tasks.

Lecture mode learning is developed within tutorials where assessment tasks are discussed and worked upon.  You will learn through several assessment projects that utilise a wide skill base, from developing different modes of writing and spatial skills and historical research to a range of graphic analysis methods.

Several walks around the city and off-site excusions during the semester bring texts into three dimensions and are discussed on-site.

Overview of Learning Resources

The course is primarily delivered face-to-face via lectures and tutorials and through the myRMIT student portal.

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.

To access the online resources you need to connect to the myRMIT/studies student portal using a computer with an appropriate modem and browser and an operating Internet connection. The myRMIT/studies portal is part of Online at RMIT. Online at RMIT is a networked system that uses the Internet and web technologies and applications to provide teachers and you with access to workspaces and resources via a web browser.

Much of the material for the course is available online, via myRMIT/studies

The myRMIT/studies portal contains:

- Course Schedule
- Course Assignments (assessment tasks)
- Australian History Research Guide prepared by the Central Library.
- Links to useful website and resources.
- The University Library also has extensive resources for Australian Architecture (ARCH1024) students. The Library has produced a subject guide that includes quality online and print resources for your studies rmit.libguides.com/architecture

The Library provides guides on academic referencing http://www.rmit.edu.au/library/referencing

Course Guides are available through the RMIT website.

Note: Lecture transcripts are not stored online.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities. The evidence for your learning outcomes will be in the design projects you present through a variety of visual and verbal means that will culminate in the form of a portfolio.

Assessment Tasks

1. Affinities Lecture Journal: Individual Work (15%) CLO1, 2, 3, 4.

2. Mapping Melbourne – Group Work (15%) CLO1, 2, 3, 4.

3. Research Journal (40%) CLO 1,2,3,4.

4. Knowledge Model: Individual Work (30%) CLO2, 3

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.

If you have a long-term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the program coordinator or Equitable Learning Services if you would like to find out more.
