The 25th annual Conference of the Australian Association for Professional and Applied Ethics will be hosted by the School of Global, Urban and Social Studies, at RMIT University, Melbourne.
Ethics in a crowded world
The AAPAE 2018 annual conference will be held in Melbourne on September 5-7, hosted by RMIT. The overarching conference theme will be Ethics in a Crowded World, focusing on the intersections between ethics and global practice. A key sub-theme is the global practice of humanitarianism.
The Twenty-First Century has thus far been characterised by a persistent amplification of global flows and an equal attempt to control these flows. For some, such control means pushing back in an attempt to stop or reduce these flows as far as possible. For others it means harnessing and channelling the flows to achieve individual and collective benefits. Arguably, for all it has meant significant change and adaptation.
While most attention has been given to the flows of refugees and migrants, and attempts to either increase or limit the spread of militant political movements, the diverse features of globalisation have expanded awareness, engagement and trade with people around the world.
With ‘fake news’ and people’s uprisings, terrorism and global philanthropy, the last two decades have been exciting and terrifying. This conference explores the ethical aspects of these shifts from diverse professional and practical perspectives.
Key themes of the conference include, but are not limited to:
- humanitarian neutrality and complicity (Day 1 focus)
- corporate social responsibility
- contested values, pluralism and authority
- media and education in a crowded world
- globalisation, inequality and human movement
- hegemony, hybridity and hubris
- living and working ethics
- ethical challenges of populism

Key dates
- 31 July 2018: Early bird registration closes
- 3 August 2018: Last day for submission of full papers for refereeing
- 13 August 2018: Deadline for postgraduate paper entries (full paper submission)
- 16 August 2018: Last day for submission of abstracts;
- 5-7 September 2018: Conference
Abstract submissions are welcome from practitioners, academic faculty, and postgraduate students.
If you wish to make a submission for paper presentation, please submit a 250-word abstract to aapae2018@rmit.edu.au by 16 August 2018. Authors will be notified of submission outcomes within 10 working days of submitting their abstract.
Full papers may also be submitted to be peer reviewed if required by your funding institution. These should be submitted by email to aapae2018@rmit.edu.au by 3 August 2018.
There will be an award for the best postgraduate paper (PhD or Masters) presented at the Conference.
First prize will be an award for A$500 and second prize A$250.

The conference runs across three days, with a focus on ethics in humanitarian practice on the first day. Conference participants are encouraged to register for all three days, but there is also an option to register for a single day.
If you are not already an AAPAE member, you are encouraged to join here – memberships are $90 for individuals and $200 for institutions.
Registration costs are:
- Member $350 earlybird ($400 full)
- Non-member $440 earlybird ($490 full)
- Student $200 earlybird ($250 full)
- Conference dinner $75 ($50 for students)
