Curator Anna Crane in the presence of Gija artists will present compelling insight into the exhibition.
The exhibition at RMIT Gallery (16 September - 8 November) ‘Garnkiny - Constellations of Meaning’ draws out some of the intricate networks or constellations of related knowledge – of country, of human behaviour, of the natural and social world – that this Ngarranggarni story embodies and sustains.
For Gija people, art and storytelling are intimately linked. Ngarranggarni or Dreaming narratives that are connected to the ancestral country of artists’ forebears are the well-springs from which the contemporary Warmun painting movement has arisen. Seeing a painting made by an older family member is often a young Gija person’s first experience of a particular Ngarranggarni story and the remote places where it took place. Stories have also become crucial to non-Indigenous understandings of Gija forms of cultural expression and are important points of cross-cultural contact and dialogue.
