On your marks, get set, go!
In a city constantly on the move, and as Melbourne gradually transforms into a carbon neutral environment by the year 2020, it seems rather fitting that an artwork by RMIT’s Keith Deverell titled Building Run take the stage as part of the Sustainable Living Festival.
Showcased at City Square on Swanston Street, visitors to the festival will soon become keen spectators of a daily lunchtime race that involves three elite athletes, all running to surpass their personal best. However, as the title suggests, the athletes each represent one of the buildings within the central business district. Behind each human façade is a highly energy efficient building that controls each human avatar’s performance with data on the building’s real-time energy consumption.
Artist Keith Deverell was the winner of the Sensing Sydney public art commission in 2013. Sensing Sydney was a joint initiative of Carbon Arts and City of Sydney to invite artists to work with environmental data to drive more sustainable behaviour. For Building Run’s first outing in Melbourne the team have broughtMC Will Tait on board from Our Planet Enterprises to enhance audience engagement with an irreverent sports show to frame the race .
The race runs from Tuesday to Saturday 10-14 February at 12:30pm-1:30pm, with the exception of Friday when it will run from 1.30-2.30pm.
