Curators experiment with the exhibition genre to test the potential of objects to elicit different meanings and experiences.
Robyn Healy is a Professor and Head of the School of Fashion and Textiles in the College of Design and Social Context at RMIT University.
The curatorial practice of Professor Healy spans over 30 years and she has been instrumental in the recognition and development of the fashion curation field. Professor Healy previously held senior curatorial positions at the National Gallery of Victoria and the National Gallery of Australia. In these positions she developed two major public fashion collections and curated over 30 major exhibitions. The award of an Australian Centenary medal in 2003 acknowledged the impact of Professor Healy’s curated exhibitions and associated scholarship in generation and dissemination of new knowledge to the wider community.
Professor Healy commenced working at RMIT in 2006. She has held senior leadership roles of Program Director of the Bachelor of Fashion Design (2009- 2012) and HDR Director in the School of Architecture and Design (2011-2012), and Deputy Head of Research in the School of Fashion and Textiles (2013-2014). Entitled Striptease Professor Healy completed her PhD at RMIT in 2009, an enquiry about new possibilities of exhibiting fashion in museums, which involved an understanding of the experience of wear.
On Curating Fashion- design and the experience of dress
Professor Healy’s scholarship builds on her significant contribution to fashion design through curatorial practices, innovating how fashion is understood through both design practice and everyday habits of wear.
The increased presence of fashion in museums worldwide has generated debate about curatorial modes and the understanding projected by these modes. Many still find the idea of the fashion exhibition itself a contentious proposition. For fashion is not a simple collection or exhibition experience. The idea of fashion itself is an immaterial object, disseminated through material objects such as clothing is a challenging curatorial proposition.
Professor Healy will discuss the emergent practice of fashion curation and reflect upon the role of the exhibition as an expansive, performative space, for mediation of design, circulation and generation of ideas, and collective forms of socialising.
