Professor Makaroff presents an overview of current research undertaken in the DISCUS lab at the University of Saskatchewan, including an outline of anticipated future directions for the lab's work.
At the DISCUS lab at the University of Saskatchewan our main area of research has grown from a focus on multimedia systems, and peer to peer streaming to application and system performance of web applications, sensor networks and parallel distributed processing frameworks, such as Hadoop/MapReduce. This area of research is part of the basis for a new, multidisciplinary initiative on campus as part of the Canada First Research Excellence Fund entitled "Designing Crops for Global Food Security". In particular, I will focus on recent achievements of my students in two sub-areas of our performance analysis: task scheduling in Hadoop and Opportunistic Routing in Delay-Tolerant Networks. The emphasis will be on the methodology and insight gained by the studies providing the ability to translate this preliminary work in the initial scope of investigation to the more general context in which we intend to develop systems that can process very large amounts of heterogeneous crop phenotype data from plant breeders across the world in order to help feed the world's growing population in a sustainable and healthy manner.
Professor Dwight Makaroff
Professor Dwight Makaroff gained his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of British Columbia in 1998, where his dissertation focussed on the Design, Implementation, and Evaluation of a Continuous Media Server. Now at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Saskatchewan, his research interests are in the performance of distributed and parallel computer systems, ranging from Sensor Networks to Multi-tiered Web Applications to Distributed Processing Frameworks, such as Map-Reduce and multi-core architectures. A primary focus has been on three main aspects of these systems at various levels: routing, scheduling and caching with respect to efficiency, throughput and reliability.
