Enar de Dios Rodriguez is a guest of SITUATE as a part of the 2019 SITUATE Austrian Arts Residency Exchange.
After water, sand is the most extracted natural material by humans, our society is built on it (quite literally) and contrary to what is thought, it is also a limited material whose extraction from the bottom of rivers and oceans is causing irreparable damages in nature. The interdisciplinary project Vestiges investigates the insatiable demand of sand, as well as its socio-political and environmental consequences. More specifically, "Vestiges" will focus on Victoria's landscape, and this region's sand mining history. What can the use of sand tell us about the relationship between humankind and nature?
