About this event

Meet the Panellists

Sonia Arakkal: Think Forward

Sonia Arakkal is a founder of Think Forward – a lobby group for young Australians advocating for intergenerational fairness in the tax and transfer system. Think Forward recognises that successive federal governments have failed to act in the long term economic interests of younger and future generations and aims to keep the interests of the young at the forefront of conversations about tax and economic policy. They do this by connecting economists with young people and progressing the conversation on intergenerational fairness with policy makers in Australia.

Think Forward’s writing has been published in the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, CEDA and featured on ABC Radio National and various podcasts. Sonia Arakkal is a public policy professional who has worked in government relations, management consulting and as a federal political staffer. She has previously been selected as a Young Social Pioneer by the Foundation of Young Australians and is currently a board member of the Australian Youth Affairs Coalition and Carers WA.

Lil Longman: Tomorrow Movement

Lil is a young renter, casual worker, and full time RMIT university student living and creating on Wurundjeri land. They first began campaigning in highschool, with the Australian Youth Climate Coalition, and at university raising awareness on the need for urgent climate action. Most recently, Lil has been working on the founding and launch team of Tomorrow Movement, a new youth movement building the power of young people to win a society with good jobs, great public services and a safe climate. They lead Tomorrow's arts organising team - helping other young volunteers to channel their creativity and artistic talents into building community and taking strategic action.

Billie Buxton: Out for Australia

Billie Buxton is the National Outreach Director for Out for Australia. With a passion for supporting LGBTQIA+ students and young people who are navigating their careers and queer identities, Billie has taken on this role to provide support and resources to LGBTQIA+ students across Australia.

Out for Australia provides visible mentors, role models, thought leadership and targeted support to LGBTQIA+ students and professionals to support them in being their most authentic selves in their workplaces. Supporting others to feel included and connected to their community is Billie’s key goal and she aims to foster a sense of community to ensure every person feels a strong sense of belonging.
