You have the flexibility to access a diverse range of internships - paid and unpaid, short and long-term. We’ll help you find the internship option that best suits your workplace and provide all the ongoing support you need.

What can I expect?

Suitability of role and supervision

One or more members of your organisation should act as a supervisor to the student undertaking an internship. Ideally, the work has meaningful outcomes for both the student and your organisation and leads to employment opportunities after completion.

Advertising and selection

You can advertise an opportunity at any time throughout the year. Once you apply to host an intern, the process begins. The Partnerships and Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Team will circulate your notice to students. Students then apply directly to you, and you carry out your own recruitment process.

Hosting an intern

Your organisation, the student and RMIT will sign a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Agreement before any placement begins. A nominated workplace supervisor will orientate the student, provide ongoing performance feedback and liaise with the student’s course coordinator at RMIT if required.

Frequently asked questions

These can be paid or unpaid and may be negotiated between students and the partner organisation in accordance with the Fair Work Act. RMIT encourages WIL partner organisations to pay students an award wage. However, students can be placed in unpaid experiences for personal and professional development purposes. Advice is available from RMIT WIL Practitioners in the relevant School.

All WIL activities involving a partner organisation must agree on IP ownership and record it in the WIL Agreement. In most cases, if the student is a paid employee of the partner organisation for the WIL activity, the partner organisation owns any IP created by the student. Unless otherwise agreed, the students owns any IP created during an unpaid WIL activity.

Each School has different requirements and assessment components for WIL activities. These activities are part of the academic program and students earn credit towards one or more study units.

WIL Agreements are used for all WIL activities involving partner organisations. The Agreement must be signed by RMIT, the partner organisation and the student to clarify and document all roles, responsibilities and learning outcomes.

RMIT has extensive insurance policies to cover students undertaking WIL activities for the duration of the Agreement. The minimum level of insurance provided by RMIT for all types of Higher Education and Vocational Education WIL activities is student personal accident; public and products liability; and professional indemnity. Your organisation must hold and maintain appropriate public liability insurance. If students are paid employees, your organisation will need to provide WorkCover and all employment insurances including Employer Liability and Worker’s Compensation insurance.

Students are supported in their preparation for WIL activities through:

  • attendance at careers events covering topics such as networking and managing your online presence
  • participating in mock interviews
  • completing the ‘WIL Ready’ set of modules in the RMIT Careers Toolkit
  • accessing a resume and job application review service
  • reading information from their WIL Practitioner about the purpose, aims, roles, expectations, and workplace rights and responsibilities of the WIL activity

Your organisation will need to provide a student supervisor for any WIL activity. This supervisor will mentor the student, offering support and guidance to facilitate a successful outcome, including:

  • informing the student of any OH&S requirements and relevant policies

  • providing constructive, ongoing performance feedback

  • informing other employees about the student and the purpose of the activity

  • contacting the RMIT WIL Practitioner if any issues arise

  • participating in a student evaluation and providing feedback as required.

RMIT WIL Practitioners will work with the workplace supervisor to facilitate this process.

Many students gain employment through their WIL activity. Once a WIL activity has ended, you can negotiate any future arrangements with the student directly. All arrangements must be in accordance with the Fair Work Ombudsman National Employment Standards.
