[at 34 secs…] Product design is the design of products that can vary from a simple design of a water bottle to the design of an automobile like a tesla car, or something along those lines.
[Narrator] Marcel Tjiang (Student)
Product design is about designing a new product or improving an existing product in a problem solving approach. The design focus can be from the aesthetics, ergonomics, functionality or even the sustainability.

Product Design at RMIT is a two year Diploma Program. It’s…err…a very intensive journey through exploring problems, looking for solutions, evaluating materials and processes.
[Screen Title] Robin Blood, Program Coordinator
[Narrator) Robin Blood
Product Design is really a combination of disciplines. It’s an understanding of both three dimensional and two dimensional design and applying that as a discipline into Product Design.
[Narrator] Linda Nguyen (Student)
I think it’s about visualising the needs of the user and bringing them a solution.
[Screen Title] Jansen Lye, Program Manager
[Narrator] Jansen Lye
It’s a combination of arts, technical skills and lateral thinking.
[Narrator) Robin Blood
We like to think that we are in the process of or in the business of making improvements to the way that we do things.
[Narrator) Kevin Lewis
It’s an exploration of materials and processes. It’s also passion!
[at 1 min, 44 secs…] montage of students and teachers in the workshop space discussing a prototype model.
[Narrator] Linda Nguyen (Student)
I chose to study product design because we can be creative and inventive, and it’s really exciting and rewarding to be able to see your new ideas come to life in a product.
[Narrator] Marcel Tjiang (Student)
I chose product design because I can learn more technical skills and it turns out I get more than what I expect.
[Narrator] Ben Le Mesurier (Student)
I was looking for a course that would, um, nourish my creative approach to life. Um, problem solving, and tinkering with things, building and rebuilding, designing and making things work.
[Narrator] Marcel Tjiang (Student)
For me product design at RMIT is fun. At the same time, it is challenging.
[Narrator] Tory Hendy (Student)
It’s challenging but rewarding.
[Narrator] Linda Nguyen (Student)
One of the major skills I developed in the course was, er, being able to sketch in perspective.
[Narrator] Marcel Tjiang (Student)
3D printing, lazer cutting
[Narrator] Jansen Lye
Mental skills such as time management.
[Narrator] Linda Nguyen (Student)
[at 2mins, 36 secs…] So, having learnt product design you can go into a Bachelor of Industrial Design, or possibly Furniture Design, er, other pathways involve, you know, pursuing a career as a professional product designer in and existing company or manufacturing company. Otherwise, you could pursue opportunities in Australia or overseas.
[Narrator] Ben Le Mesurier (Student)
It’s always fun. I always look forward to coming into class.
[Narrator) Kevin Lewis
The teachers with the Diploma of Product Design, they are an eclectic group. They have a broad range of experiences from marketing, advertising, exhibition design, fashion, film, television, building, graphic design, dedicated product and industrial design. And, as well as that, they are also teachers. They show you how to do things, show you why things should be done that way, and encourage you to experiment with ways of doing things as well.
[at 3mins, 25 secs…] montage of students and teachers in the workshop spaces.
[Closing title] [at 3mins, 30secs…] End sequence of Graphics, showing red graphic line appearing across the screen to reveal Diploma of PRODUCT DESIGN, Design. Invent. Solve. titles, and the RMIT logo.
[at 3 mins, 35 mins…] fade out to black screen. Background music fades and ends.
