We are here tonight at the space between the lightening projects on the Richmond housing state. This is a project between RMIT Art Public Space Students, who are working with the local community here and also the housing and community services as well. It is an open project here tonight and we hope that a lot of the local residents and also other public would come down to this state and have a look to the projects by about fifty young artists, and also links into a bigger project we have been doing, which is investigating the role of lightening interactive artwork within public space in relation to perceptions of safety, especially in dark spaces.
[Visual] Scenes of night time streets, including pedestrians crossing streets, kids playing soccer and kids walking in park in the area of Richmond, Melbourne.
[Visual] Scenes of some of the several artwork placed on the park where the exhibition takes place, including lights and flowers on the floor, lights and origami paper, student doing light reflections on a tree, detail of toy with lightening.
[Visual] The camera walks around the area to stop in an open space area where some artwork is happening. Some pillows and sheets were placed on the floor with special lightening. Two young artists are sit over the installation and covering themselves from the cold with some blankets.
Narrator (Student voiceover): This is called Home Sweet Hive and it is about the colony collapse disorder of the bees dying everywhere. I was not supposed to be on the piece but (laughs) I was supposed to be for other people to enjoy the blankets but it kind of naturally evolved into a warmth piece…so good.
[Visual] The camera shows a screen projection on a building wall.
[Visual] The camera shows general public playing with some of the artwork; two girls take some lights placed on ground and move them around.
Narrator (Student voiceover): It is basically just a very simple instructive installation, just encouraging people to make different patterns and turn the lights on and off.
[Visual] The camera shows general public and artwork; two are taking pictures with their phones, a group of people walking around one of the installations.
Narrator (Student voiceover): My name is Grace. I am just hanging out little sights.
I show you a little illustration that I have put together. You can also read it like a book and there are just some bats and a little magpie and sort of the building.
[Visual] The camera shows student Grace opening a piece of paper with the drawing she is describing.
[Visual] The camera shows general public and installations; two kids running in the area where the installations are happening, parents showing kids different installations.
Narrator (Student voiceover): In what I work here tonight I want to focus on those universal symbols of community and specially the flame with a candle, bringing people together and It is also a social engage, so is all about the experience as well.
[Visual] The camera shows people playing cards around a flaming candle. A student is working on an screen projection.
Narrator (Student voiceover): Hi, my name is Seiba and this is my project.
[Visual] The camera shows Seiba hands where she holds some silver round forms.
Narrator (Student voiceover): I have been walking around all night giving away these edging plates I made last year. So I polished them up and yeah, I’ve been exchanging people’s conversations for plates.
[Visual] The camera shows more artwork park installations.
Narrator (General Public voiceover): The organisation, the coordination of you know nearly fifty artworks across such a large area is a remarkable feat.
[Visual] The camera shows people playing with a lighted rope.
Narrator (General Public voiceover): This giving rope I like just because is a sort of madness and interactivity. There is also a disco bin, which is really nice.
[Visual] The camera shows the rubbish bin converted in a disco light installation.
Narrator (General Public voiceover): I am going to sort of going to the back story –projections, to be perfectly honest. There is also a couple of sand works really experimental and using the space quite well.
[Visual] The camera shows another student setting up an installation, using computers and a screen projector.
Narrator (Student Ben King): I am Ben King and I am a sound student here at RMIT. This night is being really successful for me. The whole idea of making the space feeling safe and welcoming and all the pieces here have done exactly that I think. I have seen so many kids running around and kind of really enjoying the space, which is what this space is meant to be for. A lot of the sonic work I think it really help with that just because you know it is not the sounds of cars and it kind of help to have this wonderful atmosphere.
[Visual] The camera shows more artwork installations including a lamp, a tent with fabrics on the wall and more fabric with lights hanging from the wall as well as screen projections on the walls.
Narrator (General Public voiceover): I think it’s gone exceptionally well. The environment that sort of being produced is extremely welcoming and really quite surprised of how sort of feels how it feels. For a student body to produce this work it’s really hiring.
[Visual] The camera shows general audience interacting with the artwork installations.
