6-Hour Fashion Challenge
RMIT’s Fashion Design and Technology students collaborate live with UK and USA on a 6 hour fashion challenge to design and produce three unique silhouettes.

Mandy Penton (Program Manager, Fashion Design and Technology RMIT)
The 6 hour project is a project that we've been working on now with Salford University in the UK for the past 3 years. This year it's become a very conceptual design orientated project that we have now linked in with Columbia College Chicago in the USA.

It's very exciting; the students have been working on Skype.
The idea is that through the day they will end up with 3 different silhouettes that represent a design idea representing a word that they've been given.

Jade Backhouse-Walker (Student Associate degree in Fashion Design and Technology RMIT)
Our word is 'Extreme', so at the moment we are looking at ways to manipulate the fabric sort of ruling up some lines at the moment which I will end up cutting and stretching to get that extreme sort of shape.

Riana Hart (Student Associate degree in Fashion Design and Technology RMIT)
Our theme is 'Noise'. We did a t-shirt we dyed it, cut it up and we are sort of basing our design on 'Frequency'. We talked to the US and UKparticipants and we picked a different range of noise to base our design from.

Tina Marino-Grahame (Senior Teacher, Fashion Design and Technology RMIT).
The benefits from this is actually being independent
and being able to think on their feet rather than spending a whole lot of time pondering, they actually have to work quickly and they can actually see that they are able to make a decision quickly and that there is a really good result at the end of it.

Douglas McManus (Teacher, Textile Design and Development. RMIT)
What they get from this is an understanding what they can actually do with fabrication and the possibility with that and take that back into the industry and educate people within the fashion industry about the possibilities of textiles and the new technology involved with textile design.

Belinda Lapenta (Student Associate degree in Fashion Design and Technology RMIT)
Its a good challenge to bring all the skills that we have learnt to date into this collaborative team work experience.
[Visuals] close up of different student garments being created
Riana Hart (Student Associate degree in Fashion Design and Technology RMIT)
I think it is really good to have this avenue to explore different things creatively except usually we do it in class but with we've always got to have briefs and stuff, so this is really great to just kind of be really free-flowing about like ideas and everything.
[Visuals] walking through corridor into studio workshop
Various student and staff say A few works that would best describe this project Creative. Challenging. Exciting.Crazy and Inspiring. It so fun. (laughing)
