DSC Update February 2019
RMIT’s Paul Gough, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Vice President, College of Design and Context is standing in front of a mural and and talks directly into camera:
PAUL GOUGH SPEAKS:
Hello everybody and welcome to 2019; a Lunar New Year. And to colleagues in Vietnam – chuc mung nam moi! It’s the year of the pig, and that is going to be a fantastic year, a year of good fortune and luck.
Kelly and I have put together a whole lot of notes – a lot of notes here that I am going to read from, or speak to - but I’m here in front of this remarkable artwork created by Esther van Noppen, called BiodiverCity. And it’s a collage of all of the sites you can see on the City Campus, a beautiful piece of work.
What a start to the year.
VE started last week.
A new VE school – management team doing a terrific job under Glenn, with Lliam, Mandy and Tony and the ASQA audit. So we’ll manage, we’ll handle, we’ll feedback. But a hell of a start, I’m very pleased.
We’re also about to bring Tania Broadley on board, the new Deputy Pro Vice-chancellor for Learning and Teaching, and she’s going to be with us – started last few days. So she’s hit the ground running and I’m looking forward to working with Tania.
Such a huge job – a massive job in terms of what we’re doing in learning and teaching, what we’re doing in in terms of canvas, what we’re doing in terms of curriculum renewal, what we’re doing in terms of the fab fifteen, and a whole range of exciting activity that she’s building on from the good work that Andrea has done with the SALTs and the Digital Learning Team and with everybody else.
So watch this space and I’ll get Tania out and about and meeting you all fairly soon.
We have the Annual Operating Plan that will be rolling out - and in the text under this video message is a lot about University activities.
The areas of focus, the five areas of focus that in future videos I’ll talk you through and show you how we’ll be leaning in – to the global agenda, to the student experience, into the service culture
So a lot of activity going on there, which I know will change the lives of many staff.
We’ve also got some Major Works going on at the moment and they are part of the college plan and they are rolled down into the school plan.
And there are five of them at the moment:
Increased collaboration with Vietnam – and I’m delighted that Rick Bennett is taking on the role of Vice President in Learning and Teaching in Vietnam. We’ve got a Hanoi project there to grow Hanoi to look at how we can build on creative industries in Hanoi.
We’ve got the Capitol Theatre opening in mid-May. More about that on a future occasion.
We’ve got the cultural assets and engagement plan which is a way of uniting all of our cultural activity across the university and that’s a very exciting project, which I’m in the middle of.
We have a huge amount of work on the vocational education front. More about that on another occasion and when I do Town Halls with Glenn and focus groups with all of you.
And then we have of course developments at Brunswick. A big project at Brunswick in terms of the design precinct - some new builds, some refurbishment and some work around the public realm. So, I was there yesterday at a project meeting, and I was there last week at a campus conversation around how we are using the indigenous garden, the dye garden, to recreate the landscape space there.
So a lot of great stuff happing in 2019.
Many of you are in contact with me, you write to me, you talk to me, you stop me in the street to tell me about the great stuff you’re doing. But you also share with me some of the issues, little things, but things that really make a difference for the good and the bad in your working lives. So please keep the conversation open. Keep talking to me. We have a fantastic shared vision together. Bundji Girri is going to be so important to us in 2019. Our shared future.
