Bee brains open way for better cameras
New research into the way that honeybees see colour could pave the way for more accurate cameras in phones, drones and robots.
TITLE: Bee brains open way for better cameras
VISUAL: This video contains a combination of text and images featuring pictures of honeybees, drones and cameras. The text on screen describes each of the images as it appears.
AUDIO: Ambient music plays throughout.
TEXT ON SCREEN: Digital systems such as cameras, robots and drones often have trouble correctly perceiving complex colour.
They assume the world is, on average, grey.
But honeybees are perfectly tuned to ambient light.
Bees have five eyes: they use two compound eyes to see flowers in colour, and three extra small eyes to see the colour of the light
Researchers are harnessing the way bees see colour o create a bio-inspired solution and improve mechanisms for processing colour information.
Through a combination of physics, biology, neuro-anatomy and ecology
we could soon have better camera colours,
more accurate drone imaging
and robots that can detect a full range of light conditions.
This is all thanks to our bee friends
and some pretty clever researchers.
