DENISE: My name’s Denise Cuthbert. I’m the Dean of Graduate Research here at RMIT.

DENISE:…are engaged in industrial workplaces working on industry problems using industry infrastructure or industry materials.

WAYNE:…We’re not an academic research organisation but we’re very keen to have researchers assist to not only provide us with insight into our work….

STEPHEN: Clearly the alignment between the two organisations in terms of what RMIT’s trying to achieve together with what Kingston needs in terms of having access to leading edge information

STEPHEN:…to work with other specialists and to bring that knowledge back to practical applications back at the City is really, really important to us.

KATE: So these linkage partnerships are really important because they provide us with a chance to…

KATE:…bring in people with different areas of expertise but also that are currently studying it so they might be up with newer practices and they’re also usually extremely enthusiastic, competent and reliable….

KATE:… Even they might provide ideas about things that you hadn’t even thought of yourself. They might bring new fresh ideas.

DENISE: I think it’s actually quite inspiring to consider the moto of the university, ‘a skilled hand and a cultivated mind…’

DENISE:… and that to my mind sums up this informed engagement with industry which has actually been part of the University’s mission since its origins.

DENISE: RMIT research, or rather the research that many of our higher degree by research candidates are doing, is applied,…

DENISE:…it’s addressing real industry problems and coming up with solutions for industry and for partner organisations. It’s translational….

WAYNE: Working cross-sectorally across different sectors is never easy, in my experience.

WAYNE: So the way that the research is presented, typically had a different success factor than us...

WAYNE:…The art of this is to try and align those success factors as much as possible so that when we cooperate, whether it be with a for-profit company, a large corporate…

WAYNE:…the success of both organisations is aligned so that we don’t push in different directions and I’m sure that’s the reason why this is such a difficult process to go through and why at the moment it seems to be working very well with RMIT.

STEPHEN:…to help that business performance improve or to solve issues within that organisation, it’s not taking time out it’s actually investing time…
