Shuo Chen - PhD Researcher
Shuo's research investigates how to improve the energy efficiency of old buildings, focusing on heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.

SHUO VOICE OVER: The average temperature of the City of Melbourne, now it's about three to five degrees higher than the suburbs in Melbourne.
VISUAL DESCRIPTION: A posterior view of a lady who walks in a floor of a high-rise building towards the glass wall to get an overlooking skyline view of Melbourne buildings. The lady continues to view the buildings then she turns her face to the right, her side view to the camera.
SHUO VOICE OVER: There are a lot of older buildings, exhausting heat air and are pumping emissions into the street. Through retrofitting, we can make the building much more energy efficient.

SHUO VOICE OVER: My name is Shuo Chen. I came from China. I am studying a PhD in Civil Engineering at RMIT University.
VISUAL DESCRIPTION: The lady is Shuo Chen. She continues to walk and to look at the buildings. Next on screen is a busy street of Melbourne, a running tram, a man biking, and people walking down the street. The camera focuses on the upper part of what looks like a historical building. Then Shou Chen, with her black backpack, appears as she walks down a street along with other people, her back to the camera.
SHUO VOICE OVER: I really love Melbourne because Melbourne is a historical city.
VISUAL DESCRIPTION: Camera focuses on upper angle view of Melbourne’s historical buildings.
SHUO VOICE OVER: They have a lot of historical buildings.
VISUAL DESCRIPTION: Different historical buildings is shown. Shuo faces the camera and continues to walk down the street, then camera focuses on the top level of a historical building. Shuo stops in front of the historical buildings and looks up to the buildings. Camera focuses on the upper view of the historical buildings.
SHUO VOICE OVER: My research is aimed to improve the performance of existing buildings, to make them much more green.
VISUAL DESCRIPTION: A high angle view of historical buildings. Camera focuses on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system of some buildings. Focus on one HVAC Unit on a building.
SHUO VOICE OVER: All those things can be achieved by replacing the heating, ventilation, air condition systems, so we call HVAC retrofit.
VISUAL DESCRIPTION: Shuo and an interior designer are holding and looking at a building plan. The officer points to sections of the building plan and discusses the plan with Shuo.
SHUO VOICE OVER: It is very important to provide people with comfortable temperature and the proper air ventilation. If the airflow is bad, people might easily get sick.
VISUAL DESCRIPTION: Still holding building plans, Shuo and the interior designer enters an office and checks the ventilation of the office. The designer picks the remote control and started the aircon.
AUDIO: Background instrumental music continues.
VISUAL DESCRIPTION: R. E. Ross House building is in focus. Shuo walks in to the reception area of Ross House Association where two staff, a female and a male staff, accommodate her. Shuo and the male staff walk down the hallway. The male officer points to one of the rooms and to its ventilation and air-conditioning system. Then he leads her to the room that holds the building’s HVAC system.
SHUO VOICE OVER:">The male officer and Shuo enters the HVAC room and Shuo interviews the officer. Both have a discussion.
SHUO VOICE OVER: Those really experienced can help me to better understand the problems happen to the HVAC retrofit.
VISUAL DESCRIPTION: Still in the HVAC room, the male officer points to parts of the HVAC pipes and controls. Their discussion continues.
SHUO VOICE OVER: I wish people can learn more about the green building retrofit through my research.
VISUAL DESCRIPTION: Camera focuses on the upper anterior view of RMIT’s iconic Building 80, Swanston Academic Building. Shuo walks down the sidewalk still with her black backpack while she looks up at Building 80. Next on screen is a tram passing by and a wide shot view of Shuo and the crowd walking outside Building 80.
SHUO VOICE OVER: RMIT is a very good location. It's in the centre of Melbourne, so the transportation's very easy to get here.
VISUAL DESCRIPTION: Shuo enters a room and sits with two of her supervisors. She receives personalised coaching from them. Shuo’s supervisors show her a book and discusses points from the book. He then closes the book and the title is in focus: HVAC Maintenance and Operations handbook.
SHUO VOICE OVER: My supervisors, they are very knowledgeable. They know about green building and about the sustainability and give me a lot of help for my PhD.
VISUAL DESCRIPTION: A magnificent view of the botanical gardens. Shuo is strolling in the garden, hand in hand with her husband, enjoying the refreshing, happily conversing with each other. Camera focuses on posterior view of the couple as they continue strolling in the botanical garden.
SHUO VOICE OVER: I like to walk with my husband in the botanical gardens because we can relax ourselves and enjoy the fresh air from nature. You can have very good balance between your work and your family life.
VISUAL DESCRIPTION: Camera focuses on the top most part of a historical building. A crowd is crossing a street of Melbourne. Shuo appears as she crosses the street while holding her pregnant belly.
SHUO VOICE OVER: I think pregnancy and study, they can go together.
VISUAL DESCRIPTION: Back to the botanical garden. Focus on the beautiful view of the trees. Shuo and her husband, each holds a cup of refreshment, as they stroll the park. What follows is a high angle view of buildings, including the Herald Sun.
SHUO VOICE OVER: I was also thinking about starting my research career, and a PhD just three to four years.
VISUAL DESCRIPTION: Shuo and her husband are sitting on the grass in the botanical garden, camera focuses on the husband’s hand caressing her wife’s pregnant belly.
SHUO VOICE OVER: But to finish PhD, I don't think it's the end.
VISUAL DESCRIPTION: Amazing view of the sun setting behind the buildings with a posterior view of Shuo and her husband who are still sitting on the grass.
SHUO VOICE OVER: I think it's the beginning to starting your research career.
