Element 1: course home page and banner
Speaker: Marcus Porcaro
Okay! Element number one. In this video we're going to show you how to update your course homepage, and put a banner on your home page.
First thing you need to do is go to the RMIT studios banner generator page.
So to get there, open up a new tab and enter rmitstudios.com.au/banner. This is a banner generator page that RMIT studios have created for you, and just follow along the steps.
Course name.
Course code.
Select if you are a VE course.
Select your school or department.
Select a background image.
Here you have a few image banks you can choose from. Scroll through the image bank and find an image you like.
Choose a text colour.
Choose an Em-Dash colour.
Select your left pixel.
And your pixel size.
Select your left pixel colour.
Select your right pixel and pixel size. And select your right pixel colour.
Once you're done, click the download button.
Go back to your home page, and now we need to bring the image into your home page.
So to do that we need to click the edit button. Once we are on the editing screen, we need to select the area that we want our image to appear. Move to the Images tab.
Because we've just downloaded it and it's not inside Canvas yet we need to upload a new image. Click Choose file. Find your file. Press open, and upload. And our course banner has uploaded onto the page.
Now we want to make sure it has some alternative text or alt text.
To do that select the image, go to the embed image button. Change the alt text. And make sure your dimensions are correct as well. They need to be 1,100 x 220 px. Press update, and there we go. Scroll down and press save.
The second part of this first element is to update the text that's underneath the banner.
This is an introductory paragraph, and will give the students some indication of what the course is, and how to get started. To change this text let's scroll back up, press edit. So scroll down in your rich text editor and we can start editing this text. The opening paragraph should be something very brief and simple.
Talks about the course, what you'll be studying and how to get started. Scroll down and press save.
And there we are, Element one is completed!
