Marking non-submitted assignments
Speaker: Kim Flowers
When it comes to grading, you want to make sure that you have the right grades at the end of a course before entering it into the student results system.
Keeping this in mind we want to draw your attention to one important facet in canvas grades.
When calculating total grades, Canvas Gradebook does not automatically put in zeros for assignments as students have not completed.
It behaves as though a student who does not submit an assignment, wasn't actually required to submit it, essentially ignoring any unsubmitted assessments.
To ensure that students are being awarded the correct grades at the end of semester, you need to make sure to allocate any students who did not submit an assignment a zero instead of just leaving it blank.
For your own records it would be recommended to leave a comment in the feedback section, explaining that the assignment was not submitted.
To do this click the grades from the course navigation menu.
Click the correct cell of the assignment, and enter 0 and a comment.
The other way is when you're marking in Speedgrader. As you scroll through the students assignments, mark any unsubmitted assignments as 0, with accompanying comments.
Thanks for watching.
