RMIT partnership with Thomson Reuters
Amy Harrington: [Our Workday 00:00:13] is proud to be partnering with Thomson Reuters to provide the Thomson Reuters Trading Facility, which is among the largest of the trading facilities of its kind in Australia. Students and academics have access to Eikon, which is a financial tool that provides live market data that students can access either in the Trading Facility or remotely.
Matt Whaley: Thomson Reuters are a large multinational organization, and we are the largest provider of financial markets information and services and trading and analytics, globally. Eikon is a technology platform that enables financial markets professionals to access financial markets, data, news, analytics, and so on by our computers and their mobile applications. It's used by a wide range of users from private client investors working from home, right through to the largest banks in the world. And end users would use it primarily to get access to real time and historical financial markets information and the latest breaking news stories to make informed decisions when they are buying or selling assets in the financial markets.
Amy Harrington: Eikon provides students with access to the same tool that financial professionals at the world's leading banks and investment firms are using, so their learning is current and relevant in a realistic, hands-on environment.
Dr. My Nyugen: For international finance, we will use both basics apps and the advanced apps for students who conduct initial market build, and portfolio analysis. And they will need to use Eikon app's portfolio analytics to compare with the benchmark portfolio.
Christopher: So we've used Eikon in the beginning with our financial markets course, and now I'm using in international finance, risk management investments. So Eikon has become my second language right now.
Krystal: So in my studies, it's helped me apply the knowledge that I've learned into real world applications, so I can look at different stocks and apply it to real stocks in the ASX, and apply what I've learned in international finance, on what I’ve learned in investment to actual application.
Christopher: The biggest we've taken away from this is the language that traders and economists use in the workplace. So when we do graduate, when we are in the industry, we can already speak the language that they're speaking as well.
Matt Whaley: Well for academics, what it's doing, it's giving them access to exactly what people in the markets are actually using at the moment. So if they're lecturing students or teaching students what's going on out in the real world, they're using the exactly the same tool that the financial professionals are actually using. So it's a lot more relevant for both the academics and, of course, the students as we mentioned.
Dr. My Nyugen: Compared to our last trading platform, Eikon is more accessible and is more easy and user friendly for our students. They only need to type in the keywords, and they can search for the key information or key apps that can facilitate a trading.
Siddhi: I do find Eikon user friendly. I can just type in one letter into the search bar, and it will come up with a thousand options. So I can explore whatever I want. I do think Eikon will help me find a job. I'm very comfortable with using this software now, and it helps me to stand out more.
Krystal: I think Eikon will help me find a job because Eikon is integral to the finance industries. It's a work skill that I've developed and I can finally use in work base, and they don't have to teach me from scratch. I'm already familiar with the system.
Amy Harrington: In the trading room, students are taught the theory and terminology of the financial markets, and they're able to apply that learning as they would in a real trading room. This results in students developing a really deep knowledge base, which prepares them well for the world of work.
