Yammer is a social network for the university. It's a place to discuss all things work and social. It's a place for you to wonder out loud, start a conversation, whether it's a big idea or a little spark of genius. For you to share this stuff you love, your passions inside and outside of work. This could be a great inspirational video for your work or even sharing a cute dog pic. Find answers where you don't know where to start.
Yammer is tapping into our knowledge network across the university, connecting our professional staff and academics all in one place. Connecting you with RMIT and things you care about. Let's get you set up on Yammer. Yammer is part of Microsoft's Office 365 suite of applications. This means you can access Yammer using your RMIT email and password login details.
You can access Yammer in three different ways. By the mobile application. You can download this on android and Apple devices. It is super easy to use, and you can view or post updates when you are on the go. There is a Yammer desktop application. This can be downloaded from Office dot com to access Yammer from your desktop. This is great to receive pop-up notifications.
And then, we have the Office 365 portal. Go to portal dot Office dot com and navigate here. By accessing Yammer on the portal, you don't need to download an application and can access Yammer from any device, anywhere, anytime.
Welcome to Yammer. Here on the left-hand side, you have your main navigation, your home button, your inbox for any Yammer messages and your notification icon. This cogwheel is for all your Yammer settings. When you access Yammer for the first time, it's important to make sure your profile is set up to suit you.
To set up your profile, go to this cogwheel and select edit settings. On the profile tab, we need to ensure your profile is set up with information you are happy for others to see. Make sure you upload a clear picture of yourself. This will display across all your Office 365 applications and people from around the business will be able to see it is you on Yammer.
Let's go to the notification tab. Yammer, by default, will be set to send you email notifications about any activity. To limit emails flooding your inbox, we can choose when you would like to receive them, by ticking and unticking these options. Remember, if you have the Yammer application on your iPad or phone, you need to set up your notifications through your settings.
Back to the home view, this is your main feed. This is split into three feeds of information. Discovery, all and following. The discovery feed suggests relevant conversations based on what you subscribe and interact with on Yammer. The all feed will show conversations from throughout the company based on your activity across Yammer and Office 365. In the following feed, you can see conversations from groups, people and topics that you follow. By default, your discovery feed will be the first feed you see.
To change this, select the feed you like to set, select the cogwheel and the drop down. At first, you may notice not a lot of information is appearing in your feed. What we want to do is set up your feed, so it generates information you are interested in and want to see. To do this, we want to get you connected with groups, topics and people that interest you. Groups are designed to bring people together with common interests. They'll target different topics and discussion points. You may find you have already been added to some groups. If so, these will be added to here in the left-hand menu.
To find more groups, select discover groups. This will show groups recommended for you based on what you are currently following. Or you can search through all groups at RMIT here. Select a group to find out more information, view conversations and more. If you like what you see, select join. Once you join a group, it will be added to your left-hand menu. You'll see any new posts in your following feed.
Topics in Yammer are used to help people discover information. They are created by using hashtags to flag information in posts and replies. By following a topic, you will receive conversations with this topic in your following feed. To discover some topics in Yammer, go to the cogwheel, select apps, scroll down to my apps, select topics. This will display a list of topics based on what you are following. Select a topic to see any conversations that have been flagged with this topic. You can then choose to follow it. Alternatively, if you go to a post you've seen with a hashtag that interests you, select the hashtag and follow.
Yammer has a powerful search function to find answers quickly. But to get the maximum value, you need to know what you are searching for and how the search behaves. Type keywords into the search bar to find files, conversations, people or groups within your network. If you need to search more than one keyword, type "and" in capitals to return results that contain both words. Select the all results to display all results from your search. If you need to narrow these results further, use the advanced search option.
If you see a post that you think might be helpful to a colleague or perhaps would go well in a different Yammer group you follow, you can share the post. If we select share, you can choose to share this to a group or via a private message. This is a great way to share any helpful pieces of information you find and saves you sending it by email.
If you see something that you would like to save for later, select the bookmark option. This will save the post and you can go back to look at it any time by going to the cogwheel, select your profile and the bookmark tab.
If you can't find what you are looking for, then ask a question. Yammer is a great place to have your questions answered, and it will generate conversation and add value to the University by growing our knowledge base. People post on Yammer for different reasons. Whether it is to ask a question, share an update, an event or post an announcement. Whatever you like. Posting on Yammer is as simple as typing in the post box from your home feed. Select the appropriate group from the dropdown list to ensure that your post goes to the right people. Add topics to your post by using a hashtag that is relevant to your post or select the topic button at the bottom of the post where you can add topics directly without a hashtag.
You can mention people like you would on other forms of social media by typing the at symbol. A drop-down list will appear with people and group names. This allows you to tag someone. Or select the add people box and start typing a name. Whoever you mentioned will receive a notification. And don't forget to lighten up your post with a GIF or a picture.
Alrighty, some key things to consider when you are getting started on Yammer. Make sure you fine-tune your notifications. Go in and edit your notification settings to avoid flooding your email inbox. Ditch the corporate speak, keep post conversational, short and sweet. Leave the formal tone for emails. Listen and respond. Don't just talk on Yammer, make sure that you like and reply to something that you want to show support for. Follow people. This is often missed, but if you follow your colleagues or people who inspire you, you'll receive their latest updates.
Respect privacy. Yammer isn't a place for sensitive information, so let's respect each other's privacy. Be brave and get involved. Writing your first post can be really daunting. But jumping over that hurdle is connecting you with a great bunch of minds. And lastly, don't forget those pet pics. Yammer is a social space for work. If the conversation is appropriate, you can post a cute pet pic or a GIF to make someone's day.
Thank you for watching our introduction to Yammer. We hope you've been able to take away some key tips and tricks to get connected on Yammer today.
