Dr Melinda Jackson: My name is Melinda Jackson and ...
VISUAL: Dr Melinda Jackson smiling at the camera.
Dr Melinda Jackson: ... and my area of research is in sleep ...
VISUAL: Same image as before but camera is now further back with a more wide angle shot of Dr Melinda Jackson smiling at the camera and standing in a native garden.
Dr Melinda Jackson: ... span sleep and experimental and clinical psychology.
VISUAL: Dr Melinda Jackson sitting in an empty lecture theatre speaking to the camera.
Dr Melinda Jackson: My research is interested in looking at how sleep loss impacts on our functioning, our cognitive functioning, and also on our moods. So I'm interested to see whether sleep deprivation in healthy people can affect how they feel during the day and how they function during the day.
VISUAL: Dr Melinda Jackson walks down a corridor at RMIT towards and past the camera.
Dr Melinda Jackson: We know that as our population is aging, there's going to be higher rates of obstructive sleep apnoea ...
VISUAL: Dr Melinda Jackson is working in the Sleep Clinic Control Room at RMIT. Her head and shoulders are reflected in a mirror on the wall of the room and an open door has a sign on it that reads: Sleep Clinic Control Room.
Dr Melinda Jackson: ... and also insomnia, so ...
VISUAL: Dr Melinda Jackson sitting at her desk speaking with an unidentified young adult female. Dr Jackson is looking at and pointing to her computer screen and the female is facing Dr Jackson and looking at the computer screen but has her back to the camera.
Dr Melinda Jackson: ... the impact of aging on sleep is another area that I'm interested in focusing on.
VISUAL: Dr Melinda Jackson sitting in an empty lecture theatre speaking to the camera.
Dr Melinda Jackson: We're starting a new area of sleep research at RMIT; there's a newly established sleep laboratory at the Bundoora campus and so we're looking to develop the area of sleep research at RMIT and increase the profile of sleep.
VISUAL: Camera pans down from the ceiling to Dr Melinda Jackson and the unidentified female sitting at her desk – they are speaking together and Dr Jackson is holding some sensor pads (that look like ear speaker buds) and is demonstrating where they will be placed by pointing to her left and right temples, chin and chest areas.
Dr Melinda Jackson: I love research; I think it's a very challenging field to be in. I find that, particularly in the area of sleep ...
VISUAL: Close up of Dr Melinda Jackson facing the camera smiling and speaking to the female whose side of face is only slightly on the left of the screen.
Dr Melinda Jackson: ... it's such a ... it impacts on so many people. I really wanted an ...

Dr Melinda Jackson: ... opportunity to really establish myself as a sleep researcher and give myself an opportunity to really just focus on my research for a good amount of time. So for the next four years, it really gives me a great opportunity to develop my research agenda and really produce ...

Dr Melinda Jackson: ... high?quality outputs and introduce sleep into RMIT.
VISUAL: Close up of Dr Melinda Jackson’s smiling face as she listens to and nods at the female (who is off screen).
Dr Melinda Jackson: RMIT provides a lot of ...
VISUAL: Close up of the computer screen on Dr Melinda Jackson’s desk. A photo on the left of the screen is of someone, probably the female, sleeping in a bed (during the sleep research). And a graph with lots of different varying lines is on the right of the computer screen. The photo disappears and the camera scans to the right of the screen to show more of the graph (but text is too small for typist to read).
Dr Melinda Jackson: ... support for V-C Fellows just to make sure that we ...
VISUAL: Close up of a section of the graph showing 10 wavy horizontal lines. From top down there are three small wavy faint black lines, two blue lines, a thicker purple wavy line with red vertical lines possibly showing breathing rhythm, two thick red lines (the bottom line is three times thicker than the one above) and finally a green thin wavy line at the bottom.
Dr Melinda Jackson: ... have everything that we need in order to achieve our ...

Dr Jackson is looking at and pointing to the sleep graph of wavy lines (as seen in previous image) on her computer screen and the female is facing Dr Jackson and looking at the computer screen but has her back to the camera.
Dr Melinda Jackson: ... research goals. For this next four years I really plan ...

Dr Melinda Jackson: ... to, as I say, develop this area of sleep at RMIT and really grow a sleep team, I suppose, and continue to develop and produce ...
VISUAL: Dr Melinda Jackson is standing and sticking a small circular sensor pad (about the size of a 20 cent piece) to the young adult female’s right temple who is sitting on a bed in a room at the sleep clinic at RMIT.
Dr Melinda Jackson: ... high?quality research outputs.
VISUAL: Same image as before but camera focuses on the young adult female’s face which is side?on to the camera whilst Dr Jackson places the sensor pad on her right temple.
Dr Melinda Jackson: I've felt a lot of ...
VISUAL: Same image as before but camera has zoomed in closer on the female’s face. Dr Melinda Jackson moves the female’s fringe to the side and then places a sensor pad on her left temple.
Dr Melinda Jackson: ... support, both from the administrative team and also ...
VISUAL: A computer pad on the wall of the sleep clinic room with sensor pad wires plugged into it. Dr Jackson’s hand reaches to touch it.
Dr Melinda Jackson: ... my other colleagues ...
VISUAL: Same image as before but camera is now close up and side on as Dr Jackson plugs a sensor pad wire into the computer pad.
Dr Melinda Jackson: ... in research ...
VISUAL: Close up on the female’s face there is now a purple wire fixed to the sensor pad on her right temple. Dr Melinda Jackson places a red wire to the sensor pad on her left temple.
Dr Melinda Jackson: ... and I feel like I've had a very smooth transition. I've been given ...

Dr Melinda Jackson: ... opportunities to do some teaching, if I would like to, and access to Higher?Degree students, as well. So yeah, it's been a very smooth, easy transition.
