Mr Michael Kiernan (Graduate, MBA (Executive) and Master of Commerce, RMIT University): I have, um, been involved in the National Emergency, um, Communications Working Group for a number of years. This working group is made up of Police, Fire, SES and Ambulance, and as well as Community groups and telecommunications carriers. This working group works together to provide a better service to the community when they’re calling triple 0 for emergency services to attend.

Um, I was involved as, um, a member of the executive steering committee, and we worked together to develop a strategy paper, um, for alternate methods of communication for the community. Um, we found that um, people are using more mobiles, more social media and using data systems, and so on, and are looking for ways in which to engage emergency services other than by voice. We need to acknowledge that um times are changing, and people want difference access to emergency services.

Michael Kiernan: I found, RMIT provided a breath of fresh air for me to work with other people to achieve goals. I think the course work, the support from this faculty, um, the variety of subjects, ah also allowed me to, ah, engage in a totally different manner outside of my Emergency Services work.

Michael Kiernan: I’ve made some absolute life-long friendships with a large group of people, and I’ve been able to utilise my leanings ah, to, to benefit the community and myself.
