Ms Rosemary Metcalfe (Ms Rosemary Metcalfe (Graduate, Advanced Diploma of Business (Public Relations), RMIT University): So initially when I started off my Advanced Diploma of Business, I didn’t really have the idea that I would go into the Bachelors of Communication, also at RMIT. That wasn’t really a thought in my mind at the time. But I was so inspired by RMIT and my passion for education and learning did develop in this time. And I found out that you could major in politics and economics, while still doing the public relations strand, which I though would be very rewarding and would out me closer to my goal of working with federal politics, for education.

Ms Rosemary Metcalfe: As part of a university project we were required to get to know government and government relations, as it is such an important aspect in public relations, and the communications industry as a whole.

I was lucky enough to work with Adam Bandt, during his federal election campaign. It was a very stressful time, as you can imagine, in the workplace. But it was really good and we got to work on communication strategies. With particularly a focus on education, and for students, and what students wanted. It was really rewarding when Adam Bandt was successful in the election. And it was nice to feel that we contributed towards something big.

Ms Rosemary Metcalfe:
So I think in the future my ultimate goal and ambition would be to work in federal politics, particularly in the Department of Education. I think I’ve really got some real world experience of what needs to be done in education, and what students would actually really benefit from. And I would love to apply these to my position, and actually see some reforms in the education system.
