TEXT ON SCREEN: Presented by Rob Hulls, Director, Centre for Innovative Justice and former Attorney-General for the state of Victoria. Rob describes his passion for social justice and law reform and invites you to join him.
VISUAL: Rob Hulls enters the former Melbourne Magistrates Court, speaking directly to the camera. Camera slowly zooms in to eventually reach a close up shot of Rob.
ROB HULLS SPEAKS: My name is Rob Hulls and I used to be the Attorney-General of the State of Victoria, but now I am the Director of the Centre for Innovative Justice at RMIT. As Attorney-General I was passionate about social justice, I was passionate about human rights and I can tell you I haven't lost any of that passion and I am bringing that passion to RMIT.
Innovative justice is all about holistic justice. It's about thinking outside the square. It's about doing things a much smarter way, a different way.
I stand here in the old Melbourne Magistrates' Court I used to appear in this court for clients on a regular basis. But it was part of an old system. It was part of an old crime and punishment model.
As far as justice is concerned, unless you innovate the system goes backwards and that's what the Centre for Innovative Justice is all about. It's going to be a centre of excellence, learning, teaching and research in relation to smart justice. Alternatives to imprisonment. Alternatives to resolving civil matters by way of the court system. We've got to think smarter when it comes to our justice system.
I mean, surely you will agree that the last thing we want to do is spend more money on jails as a community, than we do on education for instance. So the Centre for Innovative Justice is going to be very exciting. I am part of this journey and I want you to be part of this journey as well.
Get on board with the Centre for Innovative Justice.
