Melissa Tinetti: Hello. My name is Melissa Tinetti and I'm the Associate Dean of the Industry and Trades programs here at RMIT University. Today, I'm going to tell you a bit about the certificate two in plumbing and the certificate two in electrotechnology. These programs are only 10 to 16 weeks in duration. They are a great way to get an introduction into the trades of plumbing or electro technology. And before deciding on an apprenticeship, these programs will enable you to explore your interests and your capabilities.
Before I start, I'd like to acknowledge the people of the Woiwurrung and Boonwurrung language groups of the Eastern Kulin nations, on whose unceded lands we conduct the business of the university. RMIT respectfully acknowledges the ancestors and elders, past and present and emerging. And while we conduct our work remotely, I want to pay my respect to the wider unceded lands of this nation.
In both the certificate two of electrotechnology and the certificate two in plumbing, the students will have the opportunity to explore the industries for which they may seek an apprenticeship later on. Unlike a certificate three in either of the trade areas, students are not required to have an apprenticeship. The certificate two in plumbing and the certificate two in electric technology is an opportunity for the students to gain experience and an understanding of what their trade or an apprenticeship may look like.
The certificate two in electrotechnology has 13 core units and two electives. Students must undertake all of these courses to be deemed competent, and complete the certificate two in electric technology.
The certificate two in plumbing has 19 courses that the students will undertake to complete their certificate two.
The facilities at RMIT includes state-of-the-art examples of what students may use in the workplace. The certificate two in plumbing will give students the opportunity to use rooms like the sand pit and the roofing room and welding facilities. So students will be exposed to all areas of the plumbing trade to give them an idea of what the industry may look like.
The certificate two in electrotechnology has facilities that we like to call the cage, and other spaces that enable students to experience what a real life working worksite may look like. Students will have the opportunity to do wiring, to undertake practical assessments in an environment that is very similar to the workplace.
After completion of a certificate two in electrotechnology, students would be ready to start an apprenticeship in a specific trade, such as an electrician or as a air conditioning mechanic.
After completion of a certificate two in plumbing, students could then look to start a certificate three in plumbing and begin an apprenticeship.
2021 will bring many opportunities for students to start a certificate two, in either plumbing or electrotechnology. RMIT offers multiple start dates throughout the year, that will enable students to start their certificate two and potentially complete that and start a certificate three apprenticeship program as well.
