RMIT University is officially launching a new specialist postgraduate degree at the Australian International Airshow 2015 in Avalon.
The Master of Engineering (Airworthiness) is not offered elsewhere in Australia, and has been designed in consultation with industry for engineers seeking specialist knowledge and skills in airworthiness engineering and management.
Dr Akbar Khatibi, from the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, said the program was developed with the assistance of Directorate General Technical Airworthiness - Australian Defence Force (DGTA-ADF) and was intended to meet industry demand for qualified airworthiness specialists who must have both technical knowledge and an understanding of the related regulatory and safety issues.
“There are numerous changes happening in the civil and defence airworthiness regime (initial and continuing) and a need for specialised education was identified by the industry, DGTA-ADF and RMIT,” he said.
“The format of this program - which includes design, production, component supply, operation, maintenance, modification, repair or regulation - is especially relevant to technical staff working in the airworthiness field of aviation safety and is suitable for aerospace engineering graduates.”
Dr Khatibi said an appreciation of airworthiness issues early in the development stage of a product’s design, modification or repair process helped the downstream business operation and enabled a better balance to be struck between cost and safety.
“Due to these reasons, the civil and military aviation industry is looking for qualified airworthiness experts, and a simple job search on the internet returns a list of available positions in this field.”
Director of Aviation Regulation at the DGTA-ADF Dr Sonja Jenkinson said the program would benefit graduates by providing them with the tools to better understand regulations.
“DGTA-ADF identified that the cost of regulations in Defence Aviation was being driven up due to misunderstanding of the requirements of regulations and a perception of the regulations intent,” Dr Jenkinson said.
“Graduates will therefore use their understanding of regulations and their application to develop engineering and maintenance systems that best meet their business practices yet remain compliant and assure airworthiness.”
Representatives from RMIT will be available at the Airshow to offer more information about this program and other undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees in aviation and aerospace.
