RMIT University hosted 33 honoured guests from Malaysia in March, made up of the Chief Minister of Pahang Province, school principals, teachers, education staff, and students from the Pahang province.
The guests from the Pahang province of Malaysia visited RMIT University before going to Hazel Glen College, Concord School and Al-Taqwa College.
The visit was to learn more about Australian education, particularly special schools for students with learning and physical disabilities.
RMIT’s School of Education has had an ongoing relationship with SMK St Thomas over the last four who initiated the delegation between the two regions.
Head of School for the School of Education, Professor Rob Strathdee, said the Malaysian education visit will strengthen RMIT’s global outlook.
“Teachers at SMK St Thomas, supported by their Principal, have shown great faith in the ideas for innovative curriculum proposed by RMIT,” Strathdee said.
“Together, as partners, RMIT and SMK St Thomas will continue to explore new ways of teaching, bridging cultural gaps and of learning with technology.”
In 2014 staff and students from the RMIT Bachelor of Education degrees went to Malaysia for students to undertake their professional work placement.
Shona McIntosh Professional Practice Coordinator in RMIT’s School of Education said the visit to the Bundoora campus was a great event.
“Having developed our relationship over the last fews years it was fantastic to finally host our Malay friends after all they did for us on our trip” McIntosh said.
“They are a friendly people and all staff and students value the relationship between the University and the school”.
During their visit the Malay students received certificates for their participation in the etutor program which is a project that uses online technologies to tutor children from primary schools in Australia and Asia.
The guests also undertook a tour of the RMIT Bundoora West campus and had an open discussion about the education system in Australia as well as staff and students sharing their experiences of the partnership.
