Fashion Design Honours student Victoria Bliss will launch her fashion career in style after being awarded the Forever New Scholarship.
The prestigious scholarship fosters inspiring and exceptional talent in RMIT’s fashion design program, awarding recipients $20,000 to go towards university fees, a research trip to Europe with the Forever New buying team, and a 12-month contract within the retailer’s design group upon graduation.
The scholarship is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for an outstanding creative talent to kickstart their career at one of Australia’s fastest growing brands, with 300 stores in ten countries.
Bliss said she was “so excited” to realise her dream of working with a global brand at such a young age.
“It’s really wonderful to see such a forward-thinking retailer nurturing the next generation of local creatives.
“Aside from providing me with an amazing gateway into the fashion industry, this scholarship also means I can achieve all these crazy dreams and design ideas that, in the past, may not have been financially viable,” Bliss said.
Applicants underwent three rounds of interviews and presented a portfolio of work to the Forever New design team, including mood boards, technical sketches, illustrations and an example of project development from initial concept to final garment stages.
Sonya Bacha-Byrne, Head of Design at Forever New, said that Bliss’s natural aesthetic flair and hard-working attitude shone through in the extended interview process.
“Victoria’s great enthusiasm really appealed to us, and she presented an impressive creative portfolio with sound tailoring and technical skills. She went the extra mile of what was expected, creating a video and brand analysis as additional pieces of work.”
The scholarship was first awarded in 2014 to Anna Pipkorn, who has now been employed by Forever New for 18 months and was recently promoted from Design Assistant to Junior Designer. In 2015, Pipkorn designed her own capsule collection for the retailer and will play an integral role in mentoring Bliss and future scholarship recipients.
Last year, the scholarship was presented jointly to two students, Amber Reese and Lauren Trend, in recognition of the world-class strength of RMIT’s Fashion Design program.
Jo Cramer, Program Manager, Bachelor of Fashion (Design) (Honours) at RMIT, congratulated Bliss on her success and said the partnership with Forever New offers RMIT students a rare opportunity.
“The Forever New Scholarship provides generous support for a final year honours student, offering a great start to their career with a full-time role on graduation. We are delighted to continue this scholarship partnership and congratulate Victoria on her well-deserved win.”
