RMIT’s award winning collaboration with ACMI continues
For the second year in a row, ACMI have teamed up with RMIT Bachelor of Arts (Textile Design) students to create an exclusive range of ACMI merchandise.
Student Annie Cooper created an abstract design with contrasting colours which she hopes will appear on the ACMI merchandise.
Students were asked to address video game culture by exploring themes such as pixels, coding, VR and mixed reality, game characters, controllers, retro games and game graphics.
ACMI Head of Design Kat Mew and Retail Team Leader Leaona Cusick offered students feedback on their work throughout the project which helped them refine their designs and gain an understanding of what’s required in the workforce.
“Working with this talented cohort of designers to a real-world brief with specific audiences, production realities and commercial outcomes in mind, is a win for both graduates and ACMI,” Mew says.
It was proposed that students develop a number prints to be displayed on different products including glasses cases and cloth, button badges, journals, tote bags and socks.
“From this positive collaboration we have provided students with the experience of designing a range from concept to execution. This has seen them develop valuable skills for their working life and produced a delightful and commercially successful collection for ACMI’s Shop,” she says.

One of the designs Bachelor of Arts (Textile Design) student Lauren Strangini presented to ACMI staff. Strangini will continue to work with ACMI after being offered an internship following the project.
Nine students had their work selected to be launched as products for sale in the ACMI store in 2018.
“One student, Lauren Stringini, impressed us in particular and has several pieces selected to go into production.” she says.
Stringini has been offered an internship with ACMI’s award-winning Design Team.
Mew says that ACMI is proud to foster the next generation of Australian designers and that projects such as these are highly beneficial in preparing students for life after their studies.
The previous collaboration experienced great success, winning the Museum Shops Association of Australia and New Zealand Award and being short-listed for a Victorian Premiers Design Award.
ACMI is Australia's national museum of film, video games, digital culture and art – situated at the very heart of Melbourne, in Federation Square. ACMI exists to celebrate, support and explore the past, present and future of the moving image in Australia and beyond.
The RMIT X ACMI merchandise range is sold exclusively at the ACMI Shop in Fed Square and online.
