The Emerging Writers’ Festival (EWF) has announced the appointment of Izzy Roberts-Orr as Artistic Director and Co-CEO.
The Melbourne producer, writer, editor and broadcaster and RMIT graduate will lead a digitally-savvy generation of writers expanding the definition of what it means to be a writer.
Under her leadership the festival will delve further into debates around feminism, class, internet culture and the socio-political landscape in Australia; and continue its work in creating an inclusive and accessible space for new writers.
A recent graduate of the Bachelor of Communication (Professional Communication), Roberts-Orr says she was first drawn to RMIT because of the vocational focus of the courses - and was repeatedly impressed that her lecturers and tutors were actively practicing leaders in their fields.
“Although I completed a lot of internships, volunteer placements and paid roles in my time studying at RMIT, my final year placement was with the Emerging Writers' Festival as a Creative Producer,” she said.
“The program was unlike any other internship I've done – it was self-directed and facilitated an amount of trust and responsibility that allowed me to really make my own mark on the festival program.
“That role lead directly to my work as the Executive Producer of the ReReaders podcast for the past two years, and now here I am running the festival!”
Program Manager Dr Bruce Berryman said the teaching staff in Professional Communication are very proud of Roberts-Orr's achievements and congratulate her on this appointment.
”Throughout her Professional Communication degree Izzy stood out as an example of the how our students can apply the interdisciplinary skills taught in the program to boundary crossing career opportunities,” he said.
“We know that through Izzy’s appointment at the Emerging Writers Festival our existing partnership will be strengthened and further enhance the student experiences available in the program and throughout the School of Media and Communication.”
Roberts-Orr is the executive producer of the Sisteria podcast. She has produced radio for SYN, RRR and FBi radio’s All the Best.
She has been a Wheeler Centre Hot Desk Fellow, a Melbourne Fringe Uncommon Places artist and a featured artist at Junction Arts Festival.
Roberts-Orr's work has to date been published in various journals and anthologies including Voiceworks, The Lifted Brow, Seizure, Cordite, Visible Ink and the Contemporary Australian Feminist Poetry Anthology.
This year’s Emerging Writers’ Festival will run from June 14-23 in venues across Melbourne’s CBD and surrounding suburbs.
