Australia Day Honours for RMIT

The Australia Day honours list has once again recognised members of the RMIT community, including alumni and past staff members.

The honours list gives recognition to those who have made significant contributions to their community, made outstanding achievements or provided excellent or meritorious service.

Over the years more than 150 staff and alumni have been recognised.  

RMIT alumnus and acclaimed writer and director Kerry Gardner was made a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia for significant service to the community through her support for a range of cultural, social justice and environmental conservation organisations.

Retired RMIT staff member Professor Marilyn Lake was made an Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia for service to higher education. Special recognition was given to her contribution to the social sciences, as an academic, researcher and author, and through her contributions to historical organisations.

Air Commodore James Hood, an RMIT alumnus, was made a Member in the Military Division of the Order of Australia for exceptional service in aviation including aviation regulatory reform, and aircraft and aviation safety engineering for the Australian Defence Force Air.

Alumnus Richard Head was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in the General Division for service to alpine emergency search and rescue organisations.     

Retired staff member and RMIT alumnus Jillean Ludwell, received a Medal in the General Division for service to the conveyancing profession.

Former staff member Professor Mark Burry was made an Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia for his distinguished service to spatial information architecture as an academic, researcher and author. He was also recognised for his innovation in the application of digital manufacturing and construction methods.


RMIT alumni who also received honours:

Group Captain Daniel Reid was made a Member in the Military Division of the Order of Australia for exceptional service in combat aircraft logistics sustainment and governance.

Peter Mansfield was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in the General Division for service to community history and heritage preservation.

Therese McKenney received a Medal of the Order of Australia in the General Division for service to the community through social welfare organisations.

Francis  Phillips was awarded a Medal in the General Division of the Order of Australia for service to the community of Melbourne.

Detective Superintendent Damien Appleby was awarded the Australian Police Medal at the Federal level.

Superintendent Stephen White received the Australian Police Medal for his service to the Victorian Police. 

Assistant Commissioner Joe Cassar was awarded the Australian Police Medal for his service to the New South Wales Police.

Lieutenant Colonel James Campbell was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross for outstanding achievement in leading reform in the structure and delivery of Army logistics.
