Building a sustainable future

In the latest RMITin3, Hendry Group CEO Emma Hendry provides some insight into the evolving property and construction industry.

From risk mitigation, statutory compliance and emergency planning to asset optimisation and workplace health and safety, Hendry Group is an authority on the built-form in a digital proofed environment.

With many organisations seeking to create safer, smarter and more sustainable buildings, cities and communities, Executive Director of Industry Engagement Genevieve Reid spoke to Hendry Group CEO Emma Hendry about the emergence of the portfolio career and her own professional lessons. Here is what she had to say:

New and complementary skills are in demand.

Careers in the sector are changing, with growth in new jobs spanning UX specialists and coders. Skills from complementary sectors like finance, are also in growing demand across areas including risk and compliance.

Demand-side thinking is vital.

Organisations must adapt and pivot into the solution-driven economy. By looking at industry challenges, organisations can better determine what skill sets are required to solve problems and remain relevant both now and in the future.

Never stop learning.

Students must learn to be agile, acknowledge that their career is going to change, and know that they will require different skills for different periods of time in their career. “If you don’t feel uncomfortable, you’re not learning,” Hendry said.

Failure is good.

By failing fast and failing often, it teaches people what not to do. Importantly, it creates a drive to do it better next time.
