RMIT University’s graduating students are taking over Melbourne today.
First, more than 3,000 students, alumni and staff in academic gowns and mortarboards will parade down Swanston Street from RMIT to Federation Square at 10am, with more than 8,000 guests and supporters lining the route.
The colourful and vibrant annual RMIT Graduation Parade will be followed by Australia’s biggest graduation event at Docklands Stadium in the evening.
About 6,600 graduates will celebrate their achievements in front of more than 27,000 family members and friends - which includes 130 candidates graduating with PhDs and the first graduates from the University’s new Pharmacy program.
This year’s honorary doctoral recipients are The Rosie Project author, Dr Graeme Simsion, and Grand Designs Australia host, Peter Maddison.
Dr Simsion worked for many years in the IT industry, where he published two technical books and numerous papers. He is an example of how exceptional talent can flourish at RMIT, in this case producing a creative work of fiction. He has published several short stories, The Rosie Project and its sequel The Rosie Effect, and written and produced a number of short film screenplays.
Mr Maddison was an award-winning architect before he was approached to host Grand Designs Australia in 2010. A valued member and Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects, Mr Maddison is also Ambassador to programs such as Open House Melbourne. He has also contributed to local and state government forums on sustainability, such as ‘Future Proofing Geelong’.
Graduates from across the University’s 23 academic Schools will converge on Docklands Stadium for the spectacular Graduation Ceremony, one of the biggest in the southern hemisphere..
