RMIT University has been awarded more than $2.36 million in Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Grants, announced in Canberra by Education Minister Christopher Pyne.
Eight RMIT projects received funding, from research to fight dangerous infections in hospitals to the development of 3D-printed titanium implants for hip and knee joint replacements and finding innovative approaches for ending long-term homelessness.
The Linkage scheme funds collaborative research and development projects between higher education researchers and partner organisations.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Innovation and Vice-President, Professor Calum Drummond, said the outcome builds on the University's ongoing success in research partnerships.
"RMIT is renowned for the strength of our national and international industry relationships. Our researchers excel at developing new knowledge and technologies for industry applications."
Professor James Friend and Professor Leslie Yeo were awarded $326,000 to develop a newly-discovered low-power nebulisation technology for delivering anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agents to combat anti-microbial resistance in hospitals.
Brandaroma Asia Pacific are industry collaborators on the project.
Professor Ma Qian, RMIT Professor of Design, Multifunctional Structures, was awarded $360,000 for research into combining multi-scale structural design, alloy development, 3D printing, modelling and tissue engineering to develop bone-like biomimetic titanium implants.
Industry partners Anatomics and Xian Sailong Metal Materials will collaborate with Professor Qian on the project.
Dr Guy Johnson was awarded more than $137,900 for collaborative research with Sacred Heart Mission to draw new knowledge on the factors and practices that sustain positive outcomes for the long-term homeless.
The project builds on a four-year trial of a pilot program designed to end long-term homelessness, with the new funding enabling researchers to track participants for a further two years.
