RMIT University has appointed Associate Professor Julian Goddard as the new Head of its School of Art.
Associate Professor Goddard is currently Head of Curtin University’s School of Design and Art and will take-up the new post at RMIT on 1 June.
He has been an academic, writer and curator for more than 20 years, specialising in the aesthetics of the everyday.
As a curator, Associate Professor Goddard has made over 50 exhibitions and published widely on Australian, Aboriginal and concrete art, including three books.
Professor Paul Gough, Pro Vice-Chancellor Design and Social Context and Vice-President, described the appointment as a coup for the RMIT School of Art.
“We are thrilled to be welcoming someone of Julian’s experience and expertise to this position within RMIT’s globally-renowned School of Art,” Professor Gough said.
“Julian will bring over 20 years of academic and curatorial experience to the role, as well as his extensive experience in non-academic environments.
“He possesses a wealth of experience and knowledge about innovative and diverse art practice, which will allow him to contribute significantly to the School’s strategic direction going forward.”
Associate Professor Goddard said it was a great “opportunity and privilege” to be joining RMIT and he was looking forward to working within the School of Art and collaborating with the School’s industry partners.
“I am looking forward to building on the School’s focus on industry links, and continuing the development and support of students and researchers within the School,” he said.
Associate Professor Goddard is the founder and chairperson of the Australian Centre for Concrete Art – an international group that constructs large, public minimalist wall paintings and gallery installations.
He is also chairperson of The Bureau of Ideas – an international think tank that promotes public discussion of art, design, architecture and philosophy through forums in non-academic environments.
