At the 10 September meeting of the RMIT Academic Board, a motion of support was proposed regarding Dr Shahidul Alam, Adjunct Professor in the RMIT University School of Art.
The Board was advised that Dr Alam had been charged and detained under section 57 of Bangladesh’s Information Communications Act.
The motion acknowledged Dr Alam as a member of the global community of Scholars.
The Board reaffirmed the University's commitment to Academic Freedom and upheld its responsibility to support the right of members of the scholarly community to be forthright in the respectful expression of informed views and to be able to express their views free from undue institutional constraint.
Members noted RMIT’s membership of the Scholars-at-Risk network, the role of the Board in championing academic issues and academic freedom, and acknowledged the need to respect the laws of sovereign nations.
The motion was put to a vote by a show of hands at the direction of the Chair and was passed.
