Assessing the environmental performance of kerbside recycling in Victoria.
Completion: April 2014
The Centre for Design and Society (CfD+S) at RMIT University were commissioned by Sustainability Victoria to assess the environmental performance of kerbside recycling in Victoria, using a life cycle assessment approach. Environmental performance was assessed across a suite of environmental indicators, including greenhouse gas emissions, water pollution and solid waste generation.
The materials included in the study reflect the materials which are recovered from domestic kerbside recycling systems in Victoria and included glass bottles, steel cans, aluminium cans, paper (mixed, white and cardboard), plastics (polyethylene terephthalate (PET), clear and coloured high-density polyethylene (HDPE), mixed plastics, and garden/ green waste.
Overall, kerbside recycling in Victoria achieves a beneficial environmental outcome across the suite of environmental indicators.
